United Nations Secretary-General AntĂłnio Guterres has issued a renewed and urgent appeal for an immediate halt to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, warning that the situation is rapidly deteriorating and risks expanding into a wider regional crisis.
In his latest statement, Guterres emphasized that continued military escalation is intensifying humanitarian suffering, with civilians—especially women and children—bearing the brunt of the violence. He warned that ongoing attacks, displacement, and destruction of essential infrastructure are pushing the region deeper into instability.
Delivering a strong message to global leaders, he said:
“It’s time for the force of the law to prevail over the law of the force. It’s time for diplomacy to prevail over war.”
The UN chief highlighted several urgent concerns:
Humanitarian Crisis: Millions of civilians are facing shortages of food, water, medical supplies, and shelter as aid access remains severely restricted.
Rising Civilian Casualties: Increasing airstrikes and ground operations are leading to heavy loss of life, raising alarm across international human rights organizations.
Risk of Regional Spillover: Guterres warned that continued escalation could draw in neighboring countries, further destabilizing the Middle East.
He also called for:
Immediate ceasefire and de-escalation
Full respect for international humanitarian law
Unhindered humanitarian aid access
Renewed diplomatic dialogue to achieve a long-term political solution
The United Nations has repeatedly stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and that only sustained diplomacy can bring lasting peace.
As tensions continue to rise, governments, global organizations, and peace advocates across the world are intensifying calls for restraint and immediate action to protect innocent lives and restore stability.
