Centre Revokes Detention of Sonam Wangchuk
Leh, Ladakh | 14 March 2026
The Central Government has decided to revoke the detention of Ladakhi innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, nearly six months after he was detained following protests in Leh.
According to reports, the government has withdrawn the detention order issued under the National Security Act (NSA), and the decision is expected to take effect immediately. The move comes just days before the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear a petition challenging the legality of Wangchukβs detention.
Sonam Wangchuk had been detained in September 2025 amid protests and demonstrations in Ladakh related to demands for constitutional safeguards and protection of the regionβs fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
His detention had drawn widespread attention across the country, with many activists, students, and civil society groups calling for his release.
With the revocation of the detention order, further official details regarding the process and timing of his release are expected soon.
